When King Charles ascended the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, he made what seemed to be an olive branch extended to his son Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle. In his first speech as monarch, Charles expressed his love for the couple who now live in California. However, in the months since, tensions appear to have risen again between Harry and his father.

Royal author Duncan Larcombe believes Harry may have "snapped in half" the kind gesture from King Charles. According to Larcombe, Charles' approach with Harry now is very "business as usual" - if Harry wants a meeting, he needs to make an appointment and "get past the gray suits" required to speak with the king. This is a subtle way for Charles to punish his son, reflecting how annoyed he likely is with Harry's bombshell memoir "Spare" which was released in January and contained several damaging allegations about Charles and other royals.

Larcombe notes it was a "huge olive branch" for Charles to say he loved Harry and Meghan in his first speech as monarch. But Harry appears to have rejected this extension of an open hand by releasing his tell-all book soon after. In contrast, William is said to be keeping more distance from his brother after the memoir's publication. Over the past year, Harry's interactions with Charles have been minimal, meeting briefly during two trips back to the UK.

During his February visit after Charles' cancer diagnosis, Harry only met with his father for under an hour at Clarence House. In April when he returned for an Invictus Games event, no meeting occurred due to the King's busy schedule. Some speculate this distancing is Charles' way of giving Harry the "cold shoulder" treatment after the memoir burned bridges.

On the same day photos of Prince George celebrating his 11th birthday were released by the Cambridges, it was announced that the 2027 Invictus Games would be held in Birmingham. Some felt this upstaged Prince George's special day. Former GB News host Dan Woodgate stated Harry knew the timing of George's photos yet tried to "steal the thunder" with his own Invictus Games announcement, showing how "pathetic" he has become.

Royal commentator Angela Levin agreed, noting that Meghan also seems intent on upstaging the Royal Family. Every time they plan an event or release photos, Levin claims Meghan ensures Harry has something complementary planned to draw attention. She believes Meghan is "very cautious" and knows "exactly what she's doing" in shadowing other royal activities.

It appears the once extended olive branch from King Charles towards Harry has soured and fractured in the months since he became monarch. While expressing love for the couple initially, Charles now keeps Harry very much at arm's length through requiring scheduled meetings. Multiple experts perceive this as subtle punishment for Harry's tell-all book damaging his family once more. With rumors of deliberately planned clashes as well, it remains to be seen if the deep family rift can ever be mended.
