After finishing her studies, Sophie set about carving out a successful career for herself. She gained experience working for major companies like Capital Radio as well as her own PR agency, RJH Public Relations, which she ran for five years. Constantly progressing in her field, Sophie even spent time living abroad in Switzerland and Australia to further her skills. In 1993, Sophie was hired to assist with a photo shoot for Edward's charity, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Reconnecting after all those years, sparks began to fly between the pair. Edward knew a romance with Sophie would draw intense media attention, so he kept it lowkey at first. Still, they were clearly serious as by late 1993 he felt compelled to deny marriage rumors circulating in the press. Their courtship wasn't without hurdles - author Ingrid Seward claims Edward briefly got cold feet a year in as the depth of his feelings dawned on him. Thankfully the couple reconciled and by 1998, Edward was ready to take the next step.

Sadly, even before their big day arrived, Sophie faced her first scandal when topless photos of her from earlier in her career were snatched up and published by a tabloid. She was left feeling humiliated by the betrayal of her former friend who sold the images. Buckingham Palace stood firmly by Sophie's side, condemning the act.
