Earlier this week, Princess Eugenie announced the exciting news that she is expecting her second child. The 32-year-old royal, who already has a one-year-old son named August with husband Jack Brooksbank, shared an adorable photo on her personal Instagram account showing baby August kissing her belly.

In the photo taken by Jack Brooksbank, Eugenie is wearing a funny hat while little August wears a burgundy winter hat, matching pants, and rubber boots. He is hugging his mother's belly and Eugenie wrote in the caption "We are so happy to announce that there will be a new addition to our family this summer." Among those who liked the post were Eugenie's brother-in-law Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and the Princess of Wales' brother James Middleton.

Buckingham Palace also confirmed the pregnancy news in an official statement, adding that little August is excited to become a big brother. "Princess Eugenie and Mr. Jack Brooksbank are pleased to announce that they are expecting their second child this summer," a palace spokesman said. "The family is thrilled and August is looking forward to being a big brother."

The new royal baby will be born 13th in line to the throne and will be the third grandchild for Eugenie's parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. Eugenie gave birth to her first child, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, on February 9, 2021 at The Portland Hospital in London.

However, Eugenie's birth plans for her first child were reportedly very different than those of Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales. This is because Eugenie suffered from scoliosis as a child which required extensive spinal surgery and impacted her options for giving birth.

At just 12 years old, Eugenie underwent an eight hour operation to correct her spinal curvature. Two 20-inch titanium rods were inserted on either side of her back with screws placed at the top of her neck. Experts have said this type of procedure can create difficulties during natural childbirth, especially if epidural anesthesia is used. The placement of the rods makes it challenging for doctors to insert an epidural needle into the lower spine safely.

The Scoliosis Association of Great Britain cautions that it may be more difficult in post-surgery patients to find a suitable location for an epidural or to get uniform pain relief distribution from the anesthesia. In some cases, an epidural simply may not be feasible and other pain management options during labor should be considered instead. The organization's website states that some women in Eugenie's position may require a cesarean section delivery and it's important to discuss anesthesia plans with medical professionals as early as possible.

Ultimately, it's believed Eugenie chose to have a planned C-section to deliver her son August due to her history with scoliosis surgery. The palace confirmed he was safely delivered last year at The Portland Hospital in London. Now, as she prepares to welcome her second child this summer, Eugenie's medical condition from childhood will no doubt play a role in determining the best birthing options once again.

While the royal family looks forward to the new arrival, little August is surely excited to take on his new role as a big brother. Despite any challenges, Eugenie seems thrilled to be expanding her family with husband Jack. Their Instagram announcement capturing a sweet sibling moment between August and his soon-to-arrive sibling shows the love and anticipation filling their household at this exciting time. Fans worldwide will be keeping the family in their thoughts and sending congratulations as Eugenie enters the final months of her second pregnancy.
