The British press keeps things "smitten" but rumors of Kate vs Camilla friction exposed

There has been mounting speculation about tension between Kate Middleton and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. However, the UK press has typically kept things surface level, portraying any issues as minor disagreements. A recent article in the Spanish press is now exposing what could be a much more serious rift behind palace walls.

Let's start with Kate's refusal to bow to Camilla after the latter's coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Many saw this as a clear sign of discontent or disrespect from Kate towards Camilla. The imbalance in the number of guests each woman was allowed to invite seems to have played a role. According to royal biographer Tina Brown, Camilla had freedom to invite 20 guests, including her ex-husband in a higher placement than Harry. Meanwhile, Kate was only permitted four guests and her own brothers couldn't even attend.

This imbalance understandably upset Kate and William, who must have felt threatened by Camilla's influence and dominance at the event. Their tension precedes this incident as well. It's reported that Camilla never fully welcomed Kate due to her middle-class background and even interfered in her relationship with William early on. Despite being married over a decade with three children, the women have not grown closer with time.

Things appear to have deteriorated further recently. Rumors surfaced of an alleged romance between William and family friend Rose Hanbury. Not only were Charles and Camilla allegedly aware of this relationship, but they opted to cover it up instead of addressing it - which greatly angered Kate. Feeling betrayed by her in-laws, Kate has broken certain protocols in what seems a rebelling response to the current situation and lack of family support.

No major British outlet had provided details about Charles' purported involvement until now. This Spanish report not only confirms Charles knew about William and Rose's relationship, but that he actively chose secrecy over honesty with his daughter-in-law Kate. Hearing about the alleged affair secondhand from the press, after Camilla brought Rose as a guest to a recent event, must have incensed Kate further.

It's easy to understand why Kate would feel increasing discomfort, and potentially even resentment, given these behind-the-scenes dynamics unfolding over years. Her recent absence of public engagements could relate to discontent with William's actions and feeling unsupported within the royal family structure. By contrast, the British press has kept specifics of Kate and Camilla's relationship troubles quite vague to preserve the image of royal unity.

This Spanish exposé provides the most in-depth telling of friction between the two royal women to date. It depicts a much more serious rivalry than casual competition implied in more sensational UK coverage. Going forward, significant changes seem inevitable as the monarchy's generational makeover continues.
