The death of Queen Elizabeth on September 8th 2022 meant significant changes for the British Royal Family. One of the first changes was a shift in titles as Prince Charles ascended the throne to become King Charles III. It was during this transition of power that Prince George, grandson of the new King, inherited an unexpected role from his grandfather.

While Prince William was passed over for the title of Prince of Wales during his father's reign, the future is different for nine-year-old Prince George. As the oldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales, George is now heir apparent - first in line to the throne after his father Prince William. This makes George's place in the line of succession quite secure. However, when William someday takes the throne as King, George will take on the title that his father never held - Prince of Wales.

George will not only become the 28th Prince of Wales, but he will gain several other prestigious titles. As the heir to the Duchy of Cornwall, George will assume the titles of Duke of Cornwall, Earl of Chester, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. He will also inherit the private estates and assets of the Duchy of Cornwall, valued at over $1 billion.

While these titles and responsibilities may not pass to George for many years, the importance of his education and preparation is taking priority now. King Charles has emphasized that George will receive specialized schooling to groom him for his constitutional role as future monarch. The focus on a rounded education aims to instill in George a strong sense of duty and readiness for his destiny.

However, the increased focus on Prince George's future role also brings increased risk, something which deeply concerned the late Queen. She had reportedly discouraged Prince William from piloting helicopters with his family, fearing the potential tragedy of losing an heir to the throne and disrupting the line of succession. With George still so young, an unexpected succession while still a minor could destabilize the monarchy. This is something King Charles has surely taken under consideration in his new role.

As Charles faces mourning the loss of his mother alongside new responsibilities as King during a time of health issues, protecting the stability of the monarchy is paramount. It is thus very likely Charles already has plans in place to ensure the succession is not disrupted should something unexpected occur while George is still a child. Private insiders have indicated the late Queen's concerns over this scenario means a strategy has likely been prepared.

While George's future as king is assured, Prince William has indicated he does not plan to expand the number of working royals within the family. It is assumed the new Princess of Wales, Catherine, shares this view. Their younger children Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will be allowed to choose their own paths free from full-time royal duties if they wish. A regular education and opportunities to live outside the royal fishbowl are expected to be afforded to them.

Historically, those in the line of succession after the direct heir have led independent lives, for better or worse. While stories like Princess Margaret's personal struggles show risks remain, William is understandably hoping to protect his children's mental health and autonomy. With the trauma of Megxit still fresh, it is logical William and Catherine aim to avoid similar crises down the line by striking the right balance within the family.

Upon ascending the throne, King Charles now faces both honoring tradition and ensuring the future stability and public support of the monarchy. Finding the right path for George's education and future role that limits risks of a youthful succession, while respecting his family's desires for a more normal upbringing for other children, will be an ongoing challenge in the decades to come. How Charles navigates these tasks over his reign will shape the institution for generations.
