“Complete nonsense.” That was the blunt response to the latest claim that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were preparing to apologize to Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, over the Oprah interview. On Tuesday, October 6, reports suggested that the Sussexes were finally considering an apology after years of tension. But by Wednesday, that story had been firmly rejected by people said to be close to the couple.
So what really happened? Why does Harry appear so unwilling to make the first move, and has Meghan ever actually apologized for something connected to the royal family? Stay with us, because the answers reveal just how complicated this family dispute has become.
The story began when the Daily Express published what it described as an exclusive report. According to an unnamed source, Harry and Meghan were supposedly prepared to apologize to members of the royal family, particularly William and Kate, for remarks made during their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. The report placed particular emphasis on Meghan's comments concerning conversations about the possible skin tone of Archie before his birth.

The source claimed that Meghan wanted to deliver the apology personally, away from cameras and publicity. It was even suggested that the Sussexes recognized that some of what they had said had gone too far.
But the story barely lasted a day before another version emerged.
People magazine cited a source described as being close to the Sussexes who dismissed the idea that Harry and Meghan had plans to apologize to William and Kate. Then royal journalist Tom Sykes reportedly told Page Six that the Express story was “total rubbish,” saying a source close to Harry had described the entire apology story as fabricated.
American royal commentator Kinsey Schofield also questioned the idea that the Sussexes were suddenly ready to back down. She argued that their behavior had remained consistent and that anyone expecting them to publicly retract or apologize for the Oprah interview should remain skeptical.
And just like that, within less than 48 hours, a story about a possible royal reconciliation had collapsed.

The significance of the disagreement is much bigger than one newspaper report. An apology has often been described as one possible route toward repairing the relationship between the Sussexes and the rest of the family. Yet if Harry and Meghan are not prepared to make the first move, that route appears to be blocked.
The situation becomes even more complicated because much of the original conflict centered on Meghan.
During the Oprah interview, Meghan made several claims about her experience within the royal family. Those comments created enormous controversy and left lasting damage to relationships that were already under strain. From Harry's perspective, however, the problem was never simply what Meghan had said. He believed his wife had been left without sufficient support.
That position was made clear during Harry's interviews surrounding the release of his memoir, Spare, in early 2023.
Speaking to ITV's Tom Bradby, Harry repeatedly returned to what he believed was a failure by the palace to defend Meghan. He complained that, despite years of criticism directed at his wife, the institution had not publicly stood up for her in the way he expected.

That helps explain why the Sussexes may not see themselves as the side that should apologize first. From Harry's perspective, the question may not be, “Why haven't we apologized?” but rather, “Why has nobody apologized to Meghan?”
In the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, he made a similar argument, claiming that members of the institution were willing to protect other members of the family but were not prepared to defend him and Meghan in the same way.
Buckingham Palace did not publicly engage with those accusations.
And this is where the dispute becomes almost impossible to resolve. Both sides appear to believe they were wronged.
Consider Kate.
During the Oprah interview, Meghan described a disagreement surrounding the flower-girl dresses before her wedding. Meghan said Kate had made her cry, although she also claimed that Kate later apologized and sent flowers with a note.
Catherine has never publicly offered her own detailed version of that private disagreement.

That means something rather striking emerges from Meghan's own account: Kate was apparently the person who apologized.
Meghan has also spoken publicly about forgiveness. In a 2022 interview with The Cut, she discussed how forgiveness can require considerable emotional effort. But the question now is whether forgiveness can happen when neither side believes it should be the one to take the first step.
William's position appears even more difficult.
The brothers have reportedly remained largely estranged for years. Royal commentators have repeatedly suggested that William believes the trust between them has been seriously damaged. From his perspective, Harry published a memoir containing deeply personal claims about him and spoke publicly about private family matters.
For William, the Oprah interview was not simply an interview. It became another chapter in a much longer breakdown of trust.
Then there is King Charles.
The King has reportedly maintained a warmer relationship with Harry than William has, and the possibility of a reunion involving the Sussexes and the wider family continues to attract attention. But bringing everyone together becomes extremely difficult when the brothers themselves remain unable to communicate normally.
