Meghan Markle wore one of Princess Diana’s necklaces to send a “powerful symbol” to the Royal Family. A jewellery expert has made the claims after the Duchess of Sussex, 42, stepped out in the necklace that it’s thought Prince Harry recently gifted her.

She wore the necklace - a delicate diamond cross on a gold chain that belonged to Prince Harry's mother - at a reception for military families in Abuja on May 11.

James Harris, is the regional sales manager at Austen & Blake, talked about the symbolism of Meghan choosing the jewels.

He said that her choosing to wear the sentimental jewellery “didn’t go unnoticed,” reports GBNews. He said: "Traditionally, a cross pendant symbolises faith, hope, and protection.

"For many, it represents a connection to one's spiritual beliefs and a reminder of resilience and strength in times of adversity.

"In Meghan’s case, the cross might also be seen as a symbol of unity and peace, reflecting her commitment to humanitarian efforts and her dedication to fostering understanding across cultures."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as working royals in 2020 and since their relationship with key members of the Royal Family - including Prince William and Princess Kate - have struggled.

The "symbol of unity and peace" could be a nod from Meghan to her inlaws.

Harris added: "We love that Meghan’s choice of jewellery often carries layers of meaning, and this cross pendant is no exception.”

Meghan's wardrobe for the visit is estimated to have cost around £120,000 ranging from a peach backless dress by Heidi Merrick to a strappy printed dress by Johanna Ortiz.

Prince Harry and Meghan had been invited to the West African country by its highest-ranking military official to showcase the causes they care most about - including the Invictus Games.

Those are the new claims from Paul Burrell, who worked as the former butler to Princess Diana.

It’s been reported that George Clooney and his wife Amal, along with Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, have turned down recent invites from the pair.
