Pippa Middleton would be the right choice for a non-expanded role in the royal family under Prince William and Kate, a royal correspondent said.

Kate will become Queen in the future once her husband Prince William ascends to the throne. Pippa, 40, could be considered to play the role of her sister's lady-in-waiting once she becomes Queen, a role that has traditionally been expected to serve the queen for life. Historically, ladies-in-waiting assisted with royal duties including managing the Queen's wardrobe and assisting her with dressing and bathing. While this tradition seems like a relic of the past, the practice of appointing ladies-in-waiting still exists, albeit in different roles. The late Queen Elizabeth had several attendants and while Queen Camilla has ignored the name, she has appointed six women to support her as she carries out her duties, known as the Queen's companions.

Royal expert Danielle Stacey believes online reports suggest that Pippa, who won fans at her sister's royal wedding in 2011, could be a shoe-in for the role of Lady-in-Waiting once Kate becomes Queen. She said: "The Princess of Wales's sister Pippa Matthews would be a fitting choice as one of Queen Kate's attendants, and I believe that like Camilla, she will use these modern terms rather than ladies-in-waiting. Pippa has been there to support Kate during some of the biggest moments of her life, including her role as bridesmaid at the Royal Wedding."

The work done by the Queen's contemporary consorts is not as extensive as it once was, and on certain occasions they may attend an engagement rather than a wedding, private secretary, or deputy private secretary, as seen with Queen Camilla. Like Kate, Pippa has three young children, including her youngest Rose, who was born in 2022. The sisters are also close to their younger brother James.

Stacey's claims were echoed by royal historian Kate Williams, who said Pippa had been set in a key role. Speaking on Royal Beat, she said: "I think traditionally we might expect Catherine to appoint her sister Pippa as lady-in-waiting because Catherine is very close to her family. She doesn't have companions because she is very close to her mother and sister."

Williams said the role of the Queen is constantly evolving, so when Kate takes on the role, she will likely need some assistance to help her carry out her duties. "So when Catherine becomes Queen, the tour levels, the message levels, the receptions level will still need that help," she explained. "So I guess she'll have to hire some ladies-in-waiting."

Pippa is well-suited for such a role given her existing close relationship with Kate and experience helping her sister navigate high-profile royal events in the past. While the exact duties of a modern Lady-in-Waiting may differ from traditional expectations, Pippa could certainly provide valued support as Queen Kate undertakes her new responsibilities. Her familial bond and discretion would serve her well.

As the historian noted, even as the monarchy modernizes, the Queen's role remains expansive. Having a trusted family member by her side could help Kate balance her obligations without compromising her priority of spending quality time with her own young family. Pippa's occasional assistance with tours, receptions, and correspondences could help lighten the load. It's an arrangement that seems to work well for Queen Camilla, and could do the same for the future Queen Kate.

Overall, Pippa Middleton appears well positioned and ideally qualified to take on a supportive companion role under Kate as Queen. Her wealth of experience with the royal family alongside a preexisting close relationship give her an inside understanding few outsiders could match. A formal title may not be necessary for the more casual modern definition of the position, but Pippa's participation could benefit both Kate and the progression of the monarchy. Only time will tell if she accepts such a role, but analysts agree she would be a natural, non-extensive choice for the family.
