Prince Harry's recently released memoir "Spare" has reignited concerns within the British royal family about how much can be trusted when it comes to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams believes the book has shown that the suspicions held by senior royals about Harry and Meghan's reliability were well-founded.
"Spare" was originally published in January 2022 and became a worldwide publishing phenomenon, selling over six million copies globally. However, the memoir contained several bombshell revelations about Harry's childhood and strained relationships with his father King Charles and brother Prince William. Fitzwilliams notes the unflattering portrayal of the royal family in the book has exacerbated the rift with William and potentially made the brother's rift irreparable.

King Charles was said to be particularly angered by Harry's criticisms of his wife Queen Camilla in the memoir. This outrage helped lead to the decision to remove Harry and Meghan's official residence of Frogmore Cottage in Windsor last year. While the paperback version of "Spare" hitting shelves this month contains no new content, its release coincides with Charles and Camilla's high-profile royal tour of Australia and the South Pacific.
According to Fitzwilliams, the timing of the paperback's publication during such an important royal trip was wholly inappropriate. He believes it needlessly draws attention back to the memoir's scandals at a time when the monarchy is trying to promote unity and goodwill. The expert argues the release should have been delayed out of respect for the King and Queen Consort during their overseas engagements.
Additionally, Harry's decision to include such personal attacks and claims against his own family in a worldwide bestselling book has intensified distrust within the palace. Senior royals now view the duke as being dangerously disloyal and not to be fully trusted, says Fitzwilliams. While the Sussexes have attempted to combat this image since stepping back as working royals in 2020, the memoir appears to have backfired in terms of restoring confidence in the couple.

At the same time that "Spare" is reigniting tensions, Meghan Markle is highlighting an important supportive friendship in her life that has endured outside the royal circles - her bond with renowned British fashion designer Clare Waight Keller. Markle commissioned Waight Keller to design her iconic wedding gown for her 2018 nuptials to Prince Harry, which sparked widespread acclaim.
In a recent statement to the New York Times, Meghan shared her deep appreciation and respect for Waight Keller on both a personal and professional level. She praised Keller's elegant and modern designs along with the designer's integrity and creativity. This initial collaboration marked the beginning of a strong friendship between the two women that has lasted in the years since Meghan's high-profile marriage to Harry.
Waight Keller has now taken on an additional role as Creative Director for the popular Japanese brand Unico, where she will oversee both menswear and womenswear. Markle publicly voiced her support for this new creative venture undertaken by her trusted friend. She revealed owning Unico pieces herself and believes Waight Keller is a perfect fit for enhancing the brand's accessible yet sophisticated aesthetic vision.
